Ingredients

  • 1¼ pounds ground turkey breast 

  • ½ large onion, grated or minced small  

  • 1 jalapeño pepper, seeded and minced, optional 
  • 2 tablespoons barbecue sauce 

  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 
  • ¼ teaspoon liquid smoke flavoring 

  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning 

  • 1 teaspoon dry mesquite flavored seasoning mix (optional) 

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil 

  • ½ large onion, sliced 

  • 5 hamburger buns, split 
  • Spicy mayo, optional

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix ground turkey, grated onion, jalapeño (if using), barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, liquid smoke, steak seasoning, and mesquite seasoning. Form into five patties.

  2. Heat the cooking surface and lightly grease with a small amount of olive oil. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring often, until softened, about 5–7 minutes. Continue cooking until tender and caramelized, about 15–20 minutes more. Remove and set aside.

  3. Re-grease the cooking surface with a small amount of oil if needed. Add the turkey patties and cook for 5–6 minutes per side, turning once, until the internal temperature reaches 180°F.

  4. Assemble the burgers by placing each cooked patty on the bottom half of a hamburger bun. Top with caramelized onions and your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, cheese, spicy mayo, or ketchup.

  5. Serve warm with fries and enjoy this better-for-you burger!
